  • In traditional talk therapy, the session might focus on exploring why those thoughts arise, perhaps linking them to childhood guilt or perfectionism. While insightful, this discussion doesn’t reduce the urge to neutralize or check.

  • In ERP, the therapist might help the client intentionally face those thoughts without performing mental rituals or reassurance-seeking. For example, writing the feared thought on paper and sitting with the discomfort until it subsides.

The goal isn’t to prove the fear wrong, but to teach the brain that discomfort is tolerable and fleeting.
